Oh - you make lavender candles right?

That’s the comment I hear most of the time when I tell people I’m a Clinical Aromatherapist.

Well, either that or they will start selling me on one of the big American multi-level marketing brands of essential oils!

The truth is aromatherapy is what I like to refer to as “a scientific art form’. It’s where science and nature come together –the oils are produced by nature, but their use and application is quite scientific. And wrapped up in all of that, they have a beauty and personality all their own that truly can uplift the human spirit.

“Hey, I found this great recipe on the internet…” You may have come across recipes on the internet which tell you how to make blends for different things. Some of them are great, but many of them are recommended by people who have little to no training in the safety, therapeutic qualities or application of the oils.

It’s kind of like giving your teenager the keys to the car and saying “have fun and don’t get into trouble”. Without the right training, practice and information the chances of them having a good experience is small.

Let’s take a quick example – one I see A LOT!

You search up something like ‘kick-start my morning’ on your google search, looking for ways to get your digestive system moving. You come across an ‘aromatherapy’ blogger who happily tells you to put a couple of drops of lemon essential oil in your glass of water in the morning and drink it up.

Did you know for example that each drop of lemon essential oil is equivalent to the juice of twenty lemons?

Yep… you read that right.

And that ingesting this much of an oil like lemon over a prolonged period of time can seriously damage your stomach lining and ultimately your health!

Simplicity is key One of the cornerstones of aromatherapy is massage, and for good reason. The best way for the oils to enter your system for maximum effect is via the bloodstream. And the fastest and safest way to make that happen is via the skin. It makes sense right?

The skin is the layer between our internal systems and the outside world. And the molecules in the oils are small enough to pass through the layers of the skin and directly into the bloodstream where they can be transported to where their properties can do the most good. So, to aid digestion through out the day, start off by massaging your stomach in a clockwise direction (otherwise you might feel nauseous) using:

  • 5mls (1Tb) of carrier oil like coconut, jojoba or almond

  • Mix in 2 drops of grapefruit essential oil and one drop of ginger

The grapefruit aids digestion, it’s a great diuretic and it helps boost the immune system. And ginger is great for digestive problems, flatulence, constipation and nausea. Once you massage blend into that belly, your digestion will be raring to go. And it’s completely safe and natural as well. Give it a try and let me know how you go.

How can I find out more? If you want to learn more about the oils, our programs, or perhaps you would like a personal session to talk about your particular issue and how the oils can support you, please contact us!

I can’t wait to hear from you! Keep smiling Emx
